O designer John J. "Jack" Telnack nasceu para ser um homem da Ford. Ele não apenas entrou no mundo no Hospital Henry Ford de Dearborn, como também seu pai trabalhava na usina de força do gigantesco complexo fabril de River Rouge da Ford Motor Company. Quando menino, conheceu o próprio Henry Ford quando o lendário magnata visitou uma família vizinha. Ele também se lembra de muitas horas da juventude passadas olhando para os carros novos e reluzentes em exibição na velha Ford Rotunda - e sendo enxotado de visitas não autorizadas aos campos de provas da empresa.

Eventualmente, o amor por carros levou Jack a estudar design automotivo na Art Center School em Los Angeles. Ao se formar, foi escolhido por um recrutador da Ford e ingressou na empresa em 1958, onde permaneceria por 39 anos. Embora várias atribuições o levassem a todas as partes do império global da Ford, Telnack passou muito tempo em Dearborn contribuindo com vários Mustangs. Foi muito diferente de tudo o que estávamos fazendo aqui. Ele tinha o primeiro front-end inclinado que tínhamos feito na Ford nos Estados Unidos. Mas o carro que fizemos teve muito apoio da gerência e, felizmente, passou por uma pesquisa de mercado e apenas guinchou à frente deste tradicional Mustang americano sendo proposto ao mesmo tempo. E quero dizer guinchou à frente em termos de aceitação geral, imagem geral. Mas hoje é um design normal. Gosto de pensar nisso como um bom design normal, mas você não ouve mais ninguém se referir a ele como "europeu".

Quando voltei da Europa pela primeira vez, as pessoas pareciam ter medo de se expressar ... Mas eu realmente queria que nossos designers me contassem o que achavam sobre várias ideias, boas ou ruins. Assim que souberam disso e realmente entenderam ... eles começaram a ter essas novas ideias. Eles não tinham medo de se expressar. E o Mustang 79 é um resultado direto disso. Porque eu disse: "Vocês estão colocando essas coisas em esboços. Vocês devem pensar dessa forma, então por que não estão fazendo em tamanho real?" Eles me perguntaram: "Você está falando sério?
